This is a special day for Fausto Morra and his farm. To celebrate the corn harvest, he throws an annual party for his family, employees, and the whole area. However, Fausto hides a secret-he gained his success accepting many compromises, and now Paolo, a local veterinary inspector, is about to reveal them all. Fausto is torn between two possibilities: confess or lie.

Fausto wakes up after five years in a coma, and everything has changed. His wife, Gloria, is now in a relationship with the agronomist Michele, Fausto's best friend; his son Lorenzo has revolutionized the company; one of his daughters is leaving for Canada; and the other is now a restless teenager. On top of it all, suspicions linger on Fausto over the disappearance of veterinary inspector Paolo.

Fausto returns home after a long hospitalization and physical rehabilitation. Now, he needs to get used to the many changes that have occurred over the last five years within his family and the company. Moreover, his son has implemented a technological revolution that is particularly difficult for him to manage.

Thanks to Dr. Madrigali’s therapies, Fausto remembers that he had a lover in the past. Following this discovery, he starts to put the pieces together, gradually remembering the circumstances that, seven years earlier, led him to accept compromises in order to save the company.

Lorenzo is getting desperate: the family business is nearing bankruptcy, and the banks no longer accept any credit. An exhausted Fausto steps in to manage the situation by starting to remove the innovations and returning to the traditional methods.

Fausto feels ready to run his company again, but he suddenly has a memory of a night from five years earlier-the night of Paolo's disappearance-when he dug a hole in the ground. With the help of old farmhand Elia, he goes in search of the hole.

Fausto discovers that he was a scammer but not a murderer. Elia encourages him to forget about the past and dedicate himself to the future, a suggestion that Fausto accepts after Gloria’s return. But Inspector Baldoni does not back off: he still thinks that Fausto is a liar.

A storm threatens the planting work, which could disrupt the growth of the fragile seedlings. Inspector Baldoni discovers a connection between Paolo’s disappearance and the fraud, allowing him to reopen the investigation.

Fausto remembers throwing Paolo's body into a swampy area, and Baldoni and the police divers are already searching that location. It seems inevitable that they will find the body, and so Paolo decides to turn himself in-but things do not go as planned.

Thanks to a perfect scapegoat, Fausto has the unexpected possibility of being cleared in the investigation into Paolo's murder. The proposal is tempting, but he is reluctant to accept because of the impact it would have upon his family.

Fausto decides to make the right choice, but at that very moment, he has one last disturbing memory: a detail that could reverse every certainty and paint the whole story in an even darker and more tragic light. This time, however, Fausto wants to go all the way through with it, even if it means risking his life.

Hunted by the police and his enemies and betrayed by his loved ones, Fausto can no longer trust anyone-except perhaps the one person who has always shown unquestionable morality, and who might be able to help him discover the truth at last.
