18-year-old Anna Gibson becomes a Bride of Christ. As Sister Gabriel, she will join an order of nuns who still wear the medieval veil and habit, and live disciplined lives cut off from the outside world. Sixteen years later, Anna views her tiny cell as a prison and, at 34, is becoming acutely aware of her own desire for a child. Coincidentally, a family tragedy will change her life forever.

Anna takes care of the daily demands of Lynn's life. We see her coming to terms with an alien world and trying to remember everything her father taught her about running a mill. Used to driving tractors at the convent, she relishes the experience of driving her brother's Aston Martin - although her nephew is somewhat embarrassed at being dropped off at school by his aunt in her habit.

Miserable Sister Dominic returns from the hospital to find that Anna is still away. Meanwhile, Hal accompanies Anna to a wool auction to buy a suitable stock for traditional yarns. When Beattie arrives, he is acutely embarrassed to find "his" mill represented by a nun and does his best to sabotage Anna's attempts to buy quality wools.

An elegant figure boards the shuttle train to London, painfully aware of the stares she receives from men. She also impresses the bankers at Maynard Gideon, particularly Daniel Stern who, unaware that she is a nun, is fascinated by her. But Tyler is skeptical, and Anna leaves uncertain whether she has managed to buy a little time for the mill until they can get their new yarns established.

Lynn's baby girl is safely delivered, and Anna finds the experience immensely moving. Daniel returns with a bottle of champagne for a midnight celebration. Alone with him, Anna finds herself falling for his charms.

Beattie's efforts at sabotage continue, and it begins to look as if the mill will not be ready by the time the Japanese arrive. Walter and Hal combine forces and are determined not to be beaten now.
