Alphonse finds his acquaintance killed with his penknife sticking out of his belly. When he tries to report the crime to police inspector Morvandieu, he refuses to listen. Later, Alphonse’s wife is killed. Her killer befriends Alphonse, and the two recruit Morvandieu to commit more crimes with them.
