Cafe Secrets

Great Barrier or Aotea is 90 kms north of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf. Just 850 people live here permanently in an area half the size of Auckland City. Adam McMonagle and his girlfriend Vanessa Reed run the Wild Rose Cafe in Tryphena, the largest town on the Barrier. It's a pretty spot, just a few metres from the sea.

Julie visits three different cafes in Christchurch to see how they're doing 18 months after the fatal earthquakes. First up, Julie drops into Black Betty, a cafe in Madras Street in the middle of the Red Zone. Ironically, they had only opened three weeks before the Feb 22 quake.

The Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush, south-east Auckland is an impressive sight. Based on the design of a palace from the ancient Tang Dynasty, the Temple contains The Water Drop Cafe, a vegetarian cafe open to everyone, regardless of faith.

Napier is home to The Kitchen Table, a retro-style cafe set inside the Hawkes Bay Photographers Gallery. The gallery is run by photographer Shayne Jeffarres and the cafe is run by his wife, Catherine.

Matamata is a rural town in the central North Island. Movie fans know it as a location for 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord Of The Rings' movies but for racing fans, Matamata is the heart of the NZ Bloodstock industry.

Humbug Cafe is down a side road in New Lynn, in the middle of West Auckland suburbia, but they've been a huge hit with customers since day one. Owners Hayden Hyams and Anna Sotheran are experienced cafe owners, having run businesses in central Auckland in the past. But nothing has been as busy and successful as the out-of-the-way little gem that Humbug cafe has become.

Riverside Cafe is located in the beautiful Moutere Valley, north of Nelson. It is owned and operated by members of the Riverside Community, set up by Pacifists after the Second World War.

The small town of Ruawai on the west coast of Northland is known as the Kumara Capital of New Zealand. It's where you'll find Elle Cee cafe and Bar, a former gas station on the main drag. It's the only cafe in the whole town.
