Cain

Cain, who couldn't stop Balducci from attacking the women he loves, is devastated. He tries to put on a brave face by hiding behind black humor and chasing down criminals. To make matters worse, his past resurfaces. Bernard Letter, an anarchist friend of his father's, is looking for his missing wife. Borel arrives at the SRPJ with a bomb around his waist.

Jeanne Bonneval, a psychiatrist, is murdered by a man in her office. The killer left a drawing at the scene of his crime, using the victim's blood to tag the wall. The clinic director immediately reports the disappearance of a patient, Martial, who hasn't taken his medication for several days. Cain goes to L'Horizon, the scene of the crime, where he is roughed up by the patients.

Etienne Venturi, a reporter working for a local TV station, was found dead. He was filming on a housing estate where young people were setting fire to cars with molotov cocktails. In his car, the police found a device that allowed the journalist to listen in on police frequencies. Cain begins by interviewing Florence Murat, news director of Marseille Direct Info, the channel that employed Venturi.

Yann Jakovski, a prisoner who has always maintained his innocence, is released on a mistrial. No sooner had he left the prison than he was shot in the stomach. He died instantly. Jakovski had already served a seven-year prison sentence for attempted rape and was to be tried again for rape. The victim's father is convinced that it was one of his accusers who fired the shot.

Convict David Wilcker obtains a retrial. Seven years earlier, he was arrested by Cain and Moretti for the murder of a policeman. A new document, added to the case file by Cain's ex-wife Gaëlle, who had become close to David, enabled the judges to revisit the past. At the time, Cain, who was still walking on two legs, was investigating in tandem with Moretti.

As soon as David Wilcker is released, one of the protagonists of the case is murdered. This new murder puts Cain back on the trail of his past. Either Wilcker is manipulating him, or the real culprit is still at large. Light is gradually shed on his own faults and those of Moretti. Mistakes that could still have far-reaching consequences today.

Shots rang out on a church forecourt during the wedding of Cécile Massart, the wealthy heiress of a large family. A clergyman, Cécile's uncle, was killed, but it was clearly the bride who was the target. The investigation leads Lucie and Cain, convinced that the killer is in the family photo, to the “OK Corral” amusement park, owned by the Massart family.

Cain plays spoilsport with his ex-wife, suspecting her of having an affair with David Wilcker. Meanwhile, Antoine Marceau, a family court judge, is found dead in court. He had suffered a hallucinatory delirium before being shot by a policeman near the salle des pas perdus. It would appear that the man had ingested a potentially fatal dose of LSD.

David, Captain Cain's sworn enemy, accuses Cain of trying to assassinate him, and of mistakenly killing Steve Baron, one of his friends. The events took place at night, at the lighthouse. Cain denies it with all his might and cries manipulation, claiming he's fallen into a trap. But he himself, lacking clear memories, has doubts about his innocence.

The only person who could have helped Cain in prison is murdered in his presence. The policeman finds himself accused of not one, but two murders. The examining magistrate's theory is simple: Cain killed an inconvenient witness to silence him. The trap seems to have closed on him. Until he discovers that Tina, one of his lieutenants, had already visited David in prison during the retrial.
