Medical student, Anni and her husband Artur, senior physician, are seen as the model Aryan couple.They are young and healthy and they toe the party line. However, Artur conceals from Anni that his test subjects are disabled children.

Anni suffers a traumatic birth and nearly bleeds to death, as her lifeless newborn is resuscitated. Following the birth, Anni shares a room with the suicidal Magda Goebbels. She is astonished to discover the Goebbels’ model marriage is a shambles.

Anni and Artur keep quiet about little Karin’s condition. Artur attempts to lower the cerebral pressure to prevent the impending disability. The procedure, conducted in secret, is unsuccessful and in desperation they turn to Sauerbruch.

Karin is making a good recovery after the operation. Dr. Jung and Margot develop a mistrust of Sauerbruch’s secretary Maria Fritsch. Her lover Fritz Kolbe has a high position in the Foreign Office, and shows up on a daily basis. Is he in fact a spy?

Bombs are now regularly falling on the Charité. Karin's treatment does not lead to the desired success. Artur finally agrees to transfer his child, without informing Anni, to the "specialized children's care unit". Otto must leave for the front.

Berlin 1945. From the surgery bunker, Russian artillery fire gets closer. Wounded soldiers and air-raid victims are being treated day and night. Anni and Artur work together to treat a severely burned Jewish boy. Whoever can, flees from Berlin.
