On the 27th March 1984 just after 5pm, the caretaker of the Wellington Trades Hall - Ernie Abbott - was doing his normal rounds and locking up. During the day he'd noticed a small suitcase on the ground floor. Deciding to put the case away for safe-keeping, he picked it up, triggering the detonator and subsequent explosion. The bomb killed Ernie almost immediately.
