Easter in Art

We begin by looking at depictions of The Last Supper including Leonardo da Vincis masterpiecendasha 6th century mosaic and a modern interpretation by Chris Ofili We then turn to interpretations of Jesus betrayal and trial by artists including Bosch and TintorettonbspFinally we examine portrayals of Jesus final judgement in work by Honoreacute Daumier and Mark Wallinger

Our exploration begins in Varallo northern Italy where the Stations of the Cross were carved into a series of sculptures and frescoes We then look at Tintorettos enormous depiction of the crucifixion in Venice and Gruumlnewalds harrowing image above the Issenheim altar We also take a modern journey to the Philippines with Sebastian Horsley who experienced a form of crucifixion for himself

We take a look at works by Giotto Michelangelo and Sam TaylorWood depicting the mourning over Jesus bodynbsp Next we compare interpretations of the resurrection and ascension in several very different treatments including work by Gruumlnewald and Rembrandt and Stanley Spencer
