2. Portugal
In Portugal, in the magnificent Douro River Valley, a steam locomotive and a small historic train will take you in turn to the water's edge, on the only railroad line in the world that crosses three sites, classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the historic center of Porto, the Upper Douro wine region and the prehistoric rock art site of the Côa Valley.
3. Andalusia
Andalusia, now crossed by high-speed and modernized rail lines, unveils its rich culture and landscapes. Along the journey, we meet wine growers, horse breeders, and flamenco dancers while visiting iconic cities like Seville, Granada with its famed Alhambra, and Guadix near the Tabernas desert, the "Far West" of Spain where legendary westerns were filmed.
4. Italy
The Cinque Terre Express, one of Europe’s most spectacular rail lines, runs along Italy’s northern coast east of Genoa. Passing through five UNESCO-listed villages, it offers breathtaking coastal views and access to cobbled streets, harbors, terraced vineyards, and pastel-colored houses. This railway is a feat of engineering, providing the best way to explore this stunning, rugged region.
5. Greece
The Intercity Express No. 53 travels from Thessaloniki to Athens, passing iconic sites like the Meteora peaks, Delphi ruins, and the Acropolis. The journey continues to the Peloponnese on Greece’s last cogwheel train, running on the world’s narrowest track through the stunning Vouraïkos Gorges.
