Hundreds of years ago one of the major challenges to traders along the Silk Road was the deadly Taklamakan Desert. This desert is a 105,000 square mile waste miles of sand, dunes and gravel. The famous Salkantay Trek has been named among the 25 best Treks in the World. The Salkantay is a trek connecting the city of Mollepata with Machu Picchu and consists of an ancient and remote footpath where massive snow capped mountains collide with lush tropical rain forests.

This is an incredibly challenging hut-to-hut European alpine adventure, but what makes this trip unique is the frequent use of the "via ferrata" or "exposed trails with secure cables". The Dolomites are full of many of the cables were originally put in to the place during the fierce battles fought in northern Italy during World War 1, full of remnants and stories.
