The guild holds an annual test to see who is worthy of becoming an S-Class wizard. This year only eight members--and their partners--are competing, but not everyone is excited about the exam.

Eight wizard duos travel to an island rich with magic--but only one wizard will be given S-Class ranking. The first battle of the trials begins as Lucy and Cana go head-to-head with two members of the Thunder God Tribe.

The guild comes across a strange person in the forest who has a deadly magic power and seems to recognize Natsu. Meanwhile, the strongest of the dark guilds--Grimoire Heart--approaches the island, and they've got plans for the mysterious wizard.

Panther Lily confronts Mest about his past and powers, and the wizard finally reveals his true identity and intentions. As Grimoire Heart's transport nears the island, Makarov grows to gigantic proportions and prepares to cast Fairy Law.

One of Grimoire Heart's most powerful members holds Lisanna hostage in order to get a chance to go up against Mirajane's full power. Elsewhere on the island, Ultear finally finds Zeref, and the dark guild's true intentions come to light.

The battle between Fairy Tail, Zeref, and Grimoire Heart continues, but who does the magic council stand with? As two celestial spirits go head to head, Lucy's family history becomes a driving force in the battle.

As Loke squares off against Caprico, the truth behind the goat-man's power and history is revealed. Meanwhile, Natsu follows his nose across the island and runs into a foe he hasn't seen since Galuna Island.
