In the season premiere, Minnesota housewife Dorothy “Dot” Lyon finds herself in a pickle following a misunderstanding at the PTA meeting. As Dot’s past comes back to haunt her, the peaceful life with her husband and daughter starts to unravel.

Rancher and North Dakota county Sheriff Roy Tillman tries to reestablish the “natural order of things," with help from his deputy/son Gator and the enigmatic Ole Munch. But his methods raise suspicion with the FBI. And Officer Olmstead visits Dot.

Dot and Wayne prepare their home for Halloween – and whatever else might be coming. Officer Olmstead questions Lorraine about her daughter-in-law, but despite her own suspicions, Lorraine likes to keep things internal. Roy neutralizes an obstacle, and Gator makes a move to help his dad keep their own affairs internal. Witt Farr runs a parallel investigation and suspects foul play.

Munch sends Roy a message that their business hasn’t concluded. No matter, Gator and Roy’s men stick to the plan and move on Dot, but it doesn’t go as planned. Officer Olmsted and State trooper Witt join forces to get to the truth, but Dot isn’t so easy to corner. The FBI is told to stand down on Roy Tillman; meanwhile Roy ties up some of his own loose ends.

Lorraine has had enough of the nonsense. She uses her powerful political and financial connections to pin down Dot, for now, and even decides to open a new business venture. Roy meets his match in Minnesota; he explains his claims plainly, asks nicely even. Meanwhile, Gator and his men aren’t waiting for the answer, and Officer Olmsted gets an unlikely visitor.

The season is changing in Minnesota: Lorraine calls things off, and the FBI arrives. Wayne, still recovering, makes a surprising discovery about his life. Officer Olmstead decides to lay her cards on the table with an unlikely ally. Sensing a gathering storm, Roy mends fences with an old hired hand, who might be able to finish what Gator couldn’t.

Before heading back to work, Munch (Sam Spruell) cleans up around his house. Gator (Joe Keery) makes a treacherous play to clear up his own mistakes. Realizing she’ll never be able to outrun the past, Dot (Juno Lyon) takes a fantastic journey in hopes of rectifying the present, and experiences a profound reunion. Meanwhile, Roy (Jon Hamm) takes matters into his own hands.

Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) brings the fight to North Dakota. Roy’s re-election campaign for Sheriff is in full swing, but this isn’t going to be a typical election year. While Officer Olmstead (Richa Moorjani) takes a long overdue stand at home, Witt (Lamorne Morris) finally sees the full picture and tries to help.

An unstoppable force, an immovable object. In the penultimate episode of the season, the tide turns in the Peace Garden State. Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) calls in a favor, and Dot (Juno Temple) buys herself time. And while Gator (Joe Keery) faces his own debts, Roy (Jon Hamm) stands his ground.

It’s the season final and a storm is raging at the Tillman Ranch. Roy (John Hamm) implements a plan, and Witt (Lamorne Morris) makes a daring move. Meanwhile, Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) makes a surprise visit, Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) considers his circumstances, and Dot (Juno Temple) prepares biscuits.
