Fishing with Ladin: Fly Fishing

They get a warm, windy and smoky August day to chase Cutthroat trout with dry flies. They use hoppers and a Purple Haze to catch and release many excellent fish. They have to wait out a thunderstorm under a tree but are rewarded with more fish in this hole/run coming to the surface in very shallow water. Great fun!

It is a fairly cool Fall Day with a little bit of sun here and there showing off the bright yellows and oranges of fading deciduous shrubs and trees. The dry fly action is some of the best they have ever had with Beautiful Cutthroats going after the fly on almost every cast. What a day in the outdoors of British Columbia.

These are both good Winter and Spring patterns to try if you are not sure what to use. They catch and release really nice Rainbows. It is a cold but bright and sunny February day.

Enjoy spectacular fly fishing and scenery with Ladin and Larry as they are fly fishing the Coeur d Alene River in Idaho. It is a really nice March day but the water is still really cold. Larry Hardie joins them and starts off with a nice Cutthroat. The setup for the day is a double nymph rig with a San Juan Worm Fly pattern and a red midge pattern. They catch and release several nice Cutthroats.

It is a hot August day that gets windy in the afternoon which seemingly brings the big fish out to attack Hoppers. They use dry flies to catch and release several large and hard fighting Rainbows.

They start out on Flint Creek using nymphs but it warms up quickly and fish start to rise to Yellow Sally's so they put those on and go after them. The hatch lasts for a few hours and they have steady success throughout the hatch with several types of dry Yellow Sally patterns to catch and release Browns and Cutthroats. Then they switch rivers and head to the NF Blackfoot River.

They start the day fly fishing with Chironomids and Bloodworms and are moderately successful hooking fish. After a bit that bite stops and they go in search of a new successful tactic. It is not until early afternoon that they find the right fly. A damsel imitation. They manage to catch and release several fish with this fly either casting to shore and pulling it back to the boat or trolling.

They start with Olive, heavily weighted streamers on a sinking line and a sink tip line to get deep on this big river. It is intimidating, but they pick a nice back eddy and focus on good looking water with a fast riffle coming into a deeper pool. The first fish is a really nice Smallmouth Bass but after that it is all Rainbows. Then switch tactics to a large black Chernobyl Ant pattern.

They hike into some very spectacular country with incredible rock formations all around and scenic vistas walking the nice trail into the river. It is a very warm day in the first part of August. Even though it is small, the Rainbows have some really nice size. They get in to the river in late morning and start right away with dry flies. A double dry fly setup with a Chubby Chernobyl and an Adams.
