When Michael Bellicher links a colleague's suicide to a terrifying conspiracy involving the mysterious Miller Network, he is forced to go on the run as the police's prime suspect in what quickly becomes a murder investigation.

Chased by Huib Breger, a secret agent of the Miller Network, Michael meets an informant who passes on confidential information about a secret project the company is working on, before advising him to get in contact with a man named Vince Batte.

Michael discovers that the conspiracy is much bigger than he previously thought, and Vince realizes that the only place where it’s possible to safely log onto the Miller Network’s site is through a computer belonging to Michael’s boss.

Michael races to Brussels in a desperate effort to expose the conspiracy, while Kirsten and Vince hack into The Miller Network's main computer, unaware that Breger is on his way to intercept them…

Two years on Michael witnesses a car crashing into the river and dives in to help the trapped driver, powerful politician Wolbert Allaart. When the accident proves fatal, Michael once again finds himself facing a series of bizarre charges.

Michael is forced to work hard to prove his innocence. Released by the police, he heads south to the town of Monster with an unlikely companion: Richard Allaart, Wolbert's nephew.

Arriving in Monster, Michael and Richard encounter expert computer hackers and identity traders, the Zwaal brothers. Kidnapping Danny Zwaal, the two men interrogate him about a large-scale ID theft operation the brothers are involved in.

Michael finds a flash drive hidden in a pen that was given to him by the murdered politician Wolbert Allaart. Information stored on the drive leads the men to a support group for victims of identity theft.

The intelligence services capture Michael and subject him to a grueling interrogation. Meanwhile, Richard visits the HQ of the company trading in stolen identities.

Michael doesn't know who to trust and his indecision causes a rift between him and Richard. As the Prime Minister prepares to deliver a speech at Wolbert Allaart's funeral, a terrible realization hits Michael...
