Goodnight Sweetheart

On the day after his birthday, TV repairman Gary Sparrow is out on a service call when he gets lost and pops into a pub to ask for directions. But inside the Royal Oak, he’s transported to London in the year 1940, where he is suspected of being a spy and endures an air raid before realizing his life will never be the same again.

Yvonne urges Gary to prepare for an interview for a promotion at work, but he ignores her advice and is upset when she seems to show more loyalty to her job than to her husband. He seeks refuge by returning to the Royal Oak and finds solace dancing with Phoebe.

Gary has decided to study up on World War II, but when he reads about heavy bombing in the East End that week in history, he rushes back through the portal to warn Phoebe. Meanwhile, back in the present, Yvonne worries over Gary’s whereabouts during an IRA bombing incident.

As Yvonne goes on a weekend excursion for her Open University course, Gary asks his friend Ron to provide him with period-appropriate identity papers. Ron susses out that Gary has been time traveling and agrees to give him the papers--but only if Gary takes him back to 1940, too.

Having completed her dissertation, Yvonne wants to devote more time to her marriage. She and Gary start dancing lessons to spice up their relationship, and Gary determines not to return to 1940. But then a news item makes him question his future.

Fed up with his bizarre behavior, Yvonne gives Gary an ultimatum: get rid of his 1940s memorabilia, or she’ll leave him. Ron convinces Gary to go back one last time, and Gary tries to say his farewells to Phoebe.
