Goodnight Sweetheart

With the Sparrows in need of a mortgage, Yvonne tells Gary to ask Ron for a loan. However, Ron is still upset with Gary for spending his investment money on Phoebe and demands that he travel to 1941 and place the investment this time.

Gary is under pressure at home, as Yvonne wants a new house and a baby. When Yvonne makes a cutting remark, Gary storms out and heads to the Royal Oak to look for Phoebe. But when he finds her, she’s not alone.

Following his arrest, Gary must appear in court, putting his job in jeopardy. Yvonne wants them to attend marriage counseling, but Gary is resistant. He retreats to 1941, where he meets an equally despondent Phoebe and resolves to change his ways.

Gary pretends to be working for Ron as a cover for his time-traveling absences, but that doesn’t stop Yvonne from being upset that he’s never around. When he offers to take her out for dinner sometime, she insists they go that night--when he also happens to have special plans with Phoebe.

Yvonne surprises Gary with news of her promotion at work. Gary is happy for her--until he learns the job is in Cheshire. Unwilling to relocate, he plots with Ron to stage his suicide so that he can go back permanently to the past and live with Phoebe.

Gary wakes up in 1941 and immediately regrets his “suicide.” A bomb has hit the water mains, and Gary is put on fire-watching duty. Feeling out of place and suspecting he may have acted rashly, he returns to the present but is met with another set of difficulties.

Yvonne and Gary audition for a local play, and Gary grows jealous when Yvonne is cast in a romantic role opposite the handsome male lead. While shopping for vintage costumes for the show, he stumbles upon a money-making scheme and a secret talent.

Gary has concocted a new cover story for his time away, but Ron wonders if Gary has taken on too much. Between the play, his singing tour, and his record-selling scheme, Gary already has a lot on his plate--and then Phoebe pressures him to start publishing “his” songs.

Gary isn’t doing well after his collapse, and Yvonne only heightens his distress when she tells him she might be pregnant. Phoebe tempts Gary with a romantic getaway in the country, but their holiday doesn’t go exactly as planned.

When Phoebe’s tenancy on the pub may be revoked because she is a female proprietor, she comes to Gary for assistance. Back in the present, one of Yvonne’s coworkers reports being sexually harassed and asks Yvonne to intervene. Gary tries to help both women confront their problems.
