A delightful day of picnicking with Geordie’s family and Sidney’s friends comes to a shocking end when Sidney is arrested for sexual assault. The charge is based on claims made in the diary of a teenage girl, Abigail Redmond, who has since gone missing. As the police try to find out what happened to Abigail, Sidney strives to clear his name.

Geordie calls on Sidney for help after Valentine Lyall, a fellow at Sidney’s old college at Cambridge, falls to his death from the spire of King’s College chapel. With both his wife and star pupil insisting that Valentine was too happy to kill himself, Geordie and Sidney are drawn into a web of espionage and secrets.

With Margaret’s visits to the vicarage causing tension with Mrs. Maguire, Sidney is hoping for a distraction—which arrives in the startling form of a young man, Theo Graham, sitting in his church, covered in blood. Theo confesses to killing his landlord, but when Geordie and Sidney go to investigate, they find the alleged victim alive and well—and that’s only the start of the mystery.

Sidney is summoned to perform an exorcism at the Kingsbrook estate, which the owner believes is haunted by the spirit of his dead wife. While Sidney and Geordie work together to investigate the strange goings-on at Kingsbrook, they remain at loggerheads over the guilt of local teen Gary Bell, whose trial fast approaches.

When a man dies in a police cell on Geordie’s watch, Sidney seems to be his only ally—but the vicar’s mind is elsewhere, with one of his flock facing the gallows. As Gary Bell waits to discover his fate, Sidney seeks to prevent another injustice taking place. But as he digs deeper, he finds himself questioning whether he knows Geordie as well as he thought.

Following the difficult events of the past few weeks, Sidney has sunk into a depression, and only Mrs. Maguire and Leonard seem willing to help him. The return to the parish of Reverend Sam Milburn throws Sidney into even greater turmoil. An old friend but also a fugitive from justice, Sam has come to seek forgiveness, but his arrival causes an uproar that could turn criminal.
