The designers' first challenge is to make over their living space, an empty, three-story New York City penthouse. Before they can get to work, each competitor must deliver a compelling, one-sentence statement on camera about who they are as a designer.

For the next challenge, the designers are given eleven identical white rooms with identical white furniture pieces. Each designer must transform their space using only items purchased at a restaurant supply warehouse.

The ten remaining designers find themselves on a residential street in suburban Totowa, New Jersey where they find their first Design Challenge with real clients.

At an outdated bed and breakfast in New Jersey, the finalists are challenged to turn the place into a modern boutique inn. The competitors must adhere to the design preferences of the innkeepers, and will team up to create four unique bedrooms.

The designers transform white boxes into ultimate dream kitchens that represent the four most popular layouts and design styles in the US.

The finalists have 24 hours to design a wedding reception that reflects the bride and groom. They'll need to figure out how to execute the couple's dream design while accommodating practical needs including seating, lighting and space planning.

In a challenge inspired by the hit show HGTV'd, the designers make over six rooms in a fan family's home. Each competitor will be responsible for a different room in the house.

Each of the final four designers is assigned a studio apartment with minimal furnishings and a minimal budget of $2,500 to decorate the place from top to bottom. When they're done, they'll give tips on The Nate Berkus Show.

The finalists must design the interior and exterior of an entire house -- a tiny house of just 110 square feet. It will take ingenious creativity and savvy space planning to execute an inspiring design that is both comfortable and functional.

The last two finalists are challenged to create their own TV show pilot. Each competitor must deliver their unique show concept, collaborate with real homeowners and then showcase the room designs that they believe will help them win it all.
