Laura's Star

Laura is very excited: her slightly older friend from vacation, Alwine, is coming to visit. With her mother and Tommy, she picks her guest up from the airport. On the way back, Alwine tells Laura what she likes. She says something that makes Laura think that stuffed animals are only for little kids as far as Alwine is concerned, so Laura tries at home to hide her own Teddy bear.

When Laura comes home from kindergarten, a surprise is waiting for her: a new bicycle is in the basement for her. It even has a little star on it! It is for the bicycle tour tomorrow, Mama and Papa say. On a test-ride with Sophie, the girls meet Mr Krause and his dog, Fifi. "A really wonderful bike", Mr Krause, a sort of bicycle expert, agrees. Then Fifi raises his leg and baptises the bike.

At a street festival in her town Laura is attending a drawing contest. It is not too easy for her, because Tommy is painting busily, too. He wants to help her, but she feels bothered by him. Short after, all drawings are getting collected and presented to the jury. Then the decision is made: When Laura's name is called for the best picture she won't really believe it at first.

Laura accidentally breaks a wing of Tommy's favorite airplane. Because she sees how sad it makes Tommy she wants to fix it by herself. She asks her father, if she and Sophie could go to a near-by toy store. Arriving at the store the girls find out the store had just moved. Directions to the new store are taped to the window, obviously an easy to find route.

Laura and Tommy are very proud: They may walk Frau Krause's dog all by themselves at the near-by park. Although both are taking really good care, the dog takes his first chance to run after another dog. What a silly thing. What will Frau Krause say, when they get back without Fiffi? They run all around the park trying to find the dog. Tommy gets tiered.

There are days you better should have stayed in bed. Today's day is one of those for Laura. First she smears her teddy with blue ink and then she accidentally rips off half his arm. Because of the stupid clouds she hasn't seen the star for days. And to top it all, a loud construction area in front of the house is annoying her.

Today Laura is allowed to stay over night at Sophie's. With music, canapés and dimmed lights they both curl up. Soon it is midnight and tiredness can't be denied. While looking out the window the girls discover a man in the yard. Dressed in a long coat and cap he tampers with the flowerbed - in the middle of the night? Pretty scary!

All proud Laura and Sophie stand in front of the flowerbed in the yard and watch an offspring. This delicate, small thing that they just planted is their own private tree of friendship. As an allegory of their wonderful and unshakeable friendship it should grow big and strong. While Sophie is short gone to get water, boisterous Tommy accidently breaks the small plantlet.

Laura and Sophie eating candy when Laura suddenly feels a severe toothache. At this moment Harry comes along, who envisions an obvious urgently needed visit to the dentist in all grim colors, all just to sneak the rest of the girl's candy. But Laura doesn't care at all. She wants to get rid of this mean pain, but without going to the dentist - because of Harry's showing-off she is too scared.

When Laura and Tommy are visiting their grandparents, grandpa has a little surprise for both. Proudly he presents a beautiful, old compass from his Boy Scout era. Laura and Tommy are enthusiastic and while grandpa takes a nap they try out the compass secretly in the backyard. A little cat joins them. It is very playful and for the moment even the compass is minor matter.

It is winter and freezing cold, so cold that Laura and her friends can slide on a frozen puddle in the yard. Unfortunately Laura has to wear her new red hat grandma knitted for her. It has a big pompon at an extra long lash and it makes a mock of her to her friends. Laura hates this hat very much for that.

Laura is very pleased, because today, while audition at the ballet school, she was the best and snatched the role of the princess of the Aschenputtel-play. Her brother Tommy on the other side doesn't feel for dancing at all. He likes soccer much more. But the ballet needs a young man for the role of the prince. But no matter whom of her friends she asks it's all the same: Anyone thinks of soccer.

Aunt Karin invites Laura and Tommy over to visit a newly opened planetarium. Laura is deeply impressed after her father explained to her, that there could be the entire starry sky projected to the ceiling. Certainly she will find her star too. Hardly arrived at Aunt Karin's Laura wants to go right away. But first the three of them have to pluck some apples in the yard.

Laura's kindergarten teacher Mrs. Federlein takes the kids, which start school soon, to a so-called "snuffle-day" to the school. Laura and Sophie really looking forward, although Harry had told a very stupid school experience the day earlier. A boy from 3rd grade - his name is Leander - had supposedly forced Harry to eat an extra hot jalapeno pepper.

Laura and Tommy see a man on the street, which collects money to feed a little pony. They learn the man's name is Mr. Bini and that he has a little circus and that he doesn't know yet where to put the pony - named Polly - for the winter. Immediately Laura schemes to accommodate Polly in her house or maybe in the cellar. Of course that doesn't work out, her parents explain to her.

Mrs. Federlein's birthday is coming up. The Kindergarten teacher is turning 40 and wants to have a little party with the kids. Therefore everyone already tinkered little lanterns out of glasses and colored paper shavings. In addition every of the kids wants to give her a little present. Sophie will draw her a beautiful picture and Laura had decided on a self-made little pig of luck.

At a radio prize competition Laura wins the first prize. She gets to be with the zookeeper at the city zoo a whole day, all close to the animals. Early in the morning Daddy delivers Laura to the zoo's staff entrance. At first she gets her own uniform from Hannes, the keeper. It is too big, but nevertheless Laura is very proud of it. Now they start a round tour.
