Mara and Clara were switched at birth in the nursery when they were born. Mara lived as the daughter of poor Susan and Gary Davis while Clara, their real daughter, was brought up by the wealthy Amante and Almira del Valle. The good-natured del Valles take in Mara as a servant and decide to pay for her education, not knowing that she is their real daughter.
