Montezuma tells the tragic story of the last Aztec ruler, who lost his power and his life to the Spanish conquistadors. This work of Carl Heinrich Graun is virtuosic, expressive and musically modern for its time. The libretto was written by the Emperor of Prussia himself, Frederick II. In 1982, the Deutsche Oper Berlin came to Bayreuth to perform Herbert Wernicke's production.
