Environmental philosophy student Jessica is looking to go beyond the surfing experience and see what more the ocean has to offer. Hanli steps up and instructs Jessica in the art of free diving. Her first dive is in a protected cove in a Marine Protected Area in False bay. The episode ends on a high note as Jessica and the crew enjoy an encounter with a pod of pilot whales.

Marine biologist Erica has spent the past eleven years researching the smallest life forms in the ocean, phytoplankton. Through Erica's eyes, the role of these microorganisms in the marine ecosystem is clarified. Her dream is to swim with humpback whales, so David and his team are determined to make it happen.

Monwa's life is tied to the sea. However, his relationship to the marine environment is based in fear. David and the crew aim to help him overcome this fear by getting him into the water. Monwa learns to free dive, and once the crew is satisfied that he can handle more, Monwa takes the plunge and swims with blue sharks in an underwater canyon off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope.
