A group of actors and artists are at the peak of their creative powers. None of them expects that the open democratic society of the First Republic will suddenly turn into a regime where, over time, they will lose their little things.

A young actor refuses to participate in German films, yet, the Nazi authorities still show him favor. That will haunt his career after the war.

A pre-war film magnate sets his destiny by selling his studios to the Germans. In return, however, Czech films can be made, even with a state subsidy.

A talented actor follows his Jewish wife to the concentration camps. Years later they reunite. In the meantime, Milos Havel organizes various events to rescue artists, writers, with whom he enters into fictitious contracts to save them from forced labor.

The war is over. People seek to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by blaming and going after those who cooperated with the Germans.

The 1950s arrive and people must pretend in this new society. Some are silent, others quietly resist and others create a new persona to survive the new era.
