In 1912 Germany, a young man of humble origins becomes a secretary for a steel factory owner and falls in love with the owner's much younger wife. They secretly exchange letters when he is sent to Mexico, promising to reunite in two years. However, World War I delays his return by eight years. Upon his return, he wonders if their love has endured the long separation and the ravages of war.
