Soviet Jeans

Renars, a theatre tailor by day and a black-market trader by night, crosses paths with Tina, a talented Finnish director, sparking romance. Meanwhile, Maris, a KGB agent who blackmails Renars, also becomes infatuated with Tina.

Renars wakes in a mental hospital, accused of being a threat to society, and his mental health will be evaluated. Struggling to survive and to behave, he starts making friends and presents the hospital director with an intriguing proposal.

Renars gets on a call with Crook and Tina. They strike a deal with Strautmanis to secretly produce fake Levi’s jeans in the hospital’s sewing workshop. Renars and his wardmates begin sewing jeans, which are later sold on the black market. The KGB becomes aware of the sudden appearance of jeans, and Maris is determined to uncover their origin.

The missing pair of jeans is found, and Strautmanis initiates an investigation at the hospital. Fyodorov becomes suspicious. Maris is determined to be the first to uncover the origin of the jeans. Renars is released from the hospital for one day to help Maris gather information. Vilis discovers something that causes him to question Renars' honesty.

Renars struggles to maintain the trust of the group by organizing a party. Meanwhile, Maris grows increasingly impatient and aggressive in his investigation. As the noose tightens, Tina must exploit Maris’ feelings for her.

Renars loses support on the ward. No longer in charge, Maris begins secretly gathering information from Tatyana and recruits Fyodorov to assist him. Tina learns that her involvement has been uncovered. The gang must warn Renars.

Tatyana insists on ending the inquiry at the hospital, but Maris refuses to back down. He begins interrogating the hospital staff and patients, intensifying the pressure on everyone involved, and Renars fears that someone might break.

Renars’s wardmates are convinced that he has betrayed them all. Maris offers him a deal: all charges dropped if Renars agrees to become the face of Soviet propaganda. Maris even promises his release and the chance to finally be with Tina.
