Stephen Fry: Out There

Season 1
Traveling around the globe, Stephen Fry is on a mission to find out what it means to be gay in different corners of the world. In doing so, he considers how much has changed for him over the years and, sadly, how in some places change has been far more slow. While the UK and America have become more accepting, in certain countries being openly gay can mean imprisonment or even death.

Before setting off on his epic quest, Stephen meets Elton John and David Furnish, who inspired him, and many others, to be open about their sexuality. But it’s a far different scene in Stephen’s first port of call, Uganda, where the government is considering putting gay people to death. He then travels to the USA to explore 'reparative therapy' which claims to offer a 'cure' for being gay.

Brazil is home to the largest gay pride celebration and some of the best gay equality laws in the world. But as Stephen learns, it comes at a price. A backlash has led to, on average, one gay person being murdered every 36 hours. Similarly in Russia, Stephen discovers that rights for gay people are eroding, while in India he discovers some hopeful signs of progress for the LGBT community.
