Strathblair

Andrew Menzies arrives home on leave from the Black Watch. He tells his father, Sir James that he has promised the lease of Corriebeg to one of his platoon Sergeants, Alec Ritchie. Alec Ritchie is newly married to Jennifer and they drive up from England to set up home in Strathblair. The farm is not how Jennifer imagined it would be.

Macrae of Balbuie receives an unwelcome visitor. Alec and Jenny look forward to the forthcoming valuation with trepidation.

Several sheep go missing and a wartime colleague of Alec's appears in Strathblair, selling gates. Two other strangers are in the area looking for Robert.

Jenny must return to Salisbury to look after her sick mother and the Laird's niece's arrival causes turmoil.

Tinkers arrive for their annual stay in Strathblair. Alec accuses them of stealing a hen from him and Jenny. Robert rips up his 'call up' papers and has to run away when Brodie finds out. Alec persuades him to come back. Jenny and Veronica meet and Jenny and Alec row about her. Alec tries to buy a tractor from the auction but Umberto outbids him, and a fight breaks out between them.

Jenny hears someone crying in the byre - but there's no one there. Pheemie's Great Aunt Ishbel arrives for the Annual Agricultural Show. Jenny's friends from Wiltshire arrive to visit her and Alec. Pamela tells Ishbel that Jenny can hear 'crying'. Ishbel explains to her about the ghost and exorcises it. Umberto comes first in the Hill Race. Jenny's pony comes last.

The McPhees return to help with the hay-making. Sir James plans some changes on the estate which put Alec and Jenny's tenancy in jeopardy.

Andrew entertains his American business partner Donald Telfer. Alec and Jenny enjoy a day out at the Perth lamb sales.

Sir James is delighted when Andrew proposes to Flora. Pheemie reveals a dark secret to Jenny.

Fate takes a hand in deciding Alec and Jenny's future. The past catches up with Umberto.
