Surfer Classic Series

To kick off the season, Surfer profiles "those who ride," from big wave soul men, to the world class professionals. The legacy of the surf movie is chronicled from vintage Waikiki Beach in the 30's through the free ride era, to present day high energy video. Also, of course, there's Corky, with his sure-fire way of testing a "real surfer."

Surfer head's to the North Shore for the annual "respect sessions." Mr. Gary Elkerton is profiled as he sheds his "kong" image to take home the Hard Rock World Cup. The surf report comes in from the "Pipeline Master" competiton as Australian, Tom Carroll rises head and shoulders above the rest.

Surfer takes us to the edge for a look at the "movers and shakers" of contempory surfing. Explores how the science of hydrodynamics has perfected the surfboard of today. The outer reefs of Tahiti are the state-of-the-art remedy for modern day pressures on the Surf Report.

Hosted from Manly Beaen Australia, the "Coke Classic" exemplifies the modern surf festival. "Contest Surfer" is profiled thru the likes of Mark Richards, mike Lambrisi and Nea Post.

Surfing's Biggest Night "Live" from Sydney Australia. The crowing of the 1988 World Champion, Damien Hardman, includes morning after interviews with the champ at his home break "in the line up." The Surf Report takes a look at the World Tour from start to finish.

Surfer heads to the "Land of Oz" and captures the flavor of the lifestyle, "Australian Style." The "Lil Aussie Battler," Tom Carroll, is profiled and the eastern coast breaks from Queensland's Burreign Heads all the way down to Summercloud Bay are explored on the Surf Report. The Scripps Wave Report takes a look at shark attacks and some things to think about before you paddle out.

The crowds are gone but the swells have hit, big time, and Surfer is there to catch 'em. Haliewa, Backdoor, and Rocky Point are pumpin' but so are the other forty spots on Surfings Promised Land. Also, Hawaii's "angry young man," Sunny Garcia, is profiled revealing why he's become a threat on the World Tour.

The Surfer crew hits the South Pacific for Tahitian reefs and Fijian hospitality. The "Elder Statesman" of Tahiti, Arsen Harehoe is profiled along with fellow islander and Rookie of the Year, Vetea David. The surf freport finds the "bula" ethic alive and well on Fiji's Tavarua surf camp.

The inner workings of the publishing side are revealed as Surfer profiles the photography, writing, and editors of the voice of Surfing. Our east coast bureau checks in on the Surf Report as Cape Hatteras and Florida serve up Atlantic surfing action.

Surfer takes to the air for a helicopter survey of the California surfing life style. A day in the life of California starts off with snow boarding and progresses down the coast for surf check of the golden state's famous breaks including Steamer Lane, Malibu, Hammond's Reef, and Wind 'nd Sea.

The Surfer Poll results are in! The top five men and women of surfing for 1988 are profiled, as performance in the water is translated into honor on the beach.
