Surfer Classic Series

Drop into the '90s as we profile the many different faces of surfing. We'll find out how attitudes and mental approaches to riding a wave shape a surfer's performance. We'll also talk with surfing's favorite story teller, Bruce Brown, as well as travel to some hot surf spots around the world.

We'll start things off with a ride through the salt water hall of fame and take a look at the legacy of world champions. What better place to do it than Huntington Beach, the Southern Californian beach town dubbed "Surf City", where more surf contests are hosted per week than any other place in the world.

In this week's profile segment, we're hanging with Sunny Garcia & Johnny "Boy" Gomes and the rest of the "Bad Boy Club," a group of surfers who enjoy living the "life's a beach" attitude everyday. Surf Science discovers all is not golden in paradise as we take a critical look at the local Huntington Beach oil spill as well as the Valdez spill in Alaska.

Of the 44 surf spots in Hawaii's North Shore, every surfer knows Pipeline, Sunset and Waimea, but there are good waves breaking in less traveled places. This show will take you to the other 41 surf spots with some of the best free surfers Hawaii has to offer.

A mystical land with magical waves, Bali has become a surfing mecca and is a number one stop for the adventurous surfer. Traveling with John Shimooka and team "Off Shore", we dropped in on some radical but treacherous waves on the exotic breaks of Padang Padang and Uluwatu.

In this special issue we pay tribute to the passing of an age. Our focus is on one of the greatest surfers to ever "take the drop," Shaun Tomson. We'll profile Shaun's illustrious 14-year career that ended when he retired at the end of the winter season in Hawaii.

We're taking a close-up look at this year's North Shore winter season with "Local Motion" team Tony Moniz, Jeff Booth, & surfing's Mr. X, Glen Winton. We're going to explore this curious thing called "big wave riding." Depicted in Bruce Brown's films as a breed apart, we'll profile the riders who stand tall in the face of the ocean's fury.

The buildings weren't the only things shaking in Northern California, a region known for it's cold water and hot surf. It's been suggested that the Northern California surfer actually comes from a heartier stock; we'll find out when we meet up with Richard Schmidt, Anthony Ruffo & of course, Barney of "The Crew" from Santa Cruz.

We're heading East! This issue profiles Todd Holland & Kelly Slater, two surfers who define East Coast surfers of today. And in the Pure Fun segment, we'll look at surfing's cousin snowboarding and meet with a group of men who ride mountains. Getting back to the beach, Surfer Magazine answers the question once and for all "Who is the best surfer ever?"

We're going to take you on a trip to an island off the Java Straits as we jump aboard an Indonesian boat bound for the land of the white rhino. The search for the perfect wave has always expanded a surfer's horizons. Although the idea of sailing the Indonesian islands in search of this perfect wave is the ultimate dream...
