Adam works on his new persona for the first day of high school that he hopes will up his coolness level. Meanwhile, Beverly gets her teaching certification to become a substitute teacher. But when she is demoted to sub-janitor, she sends the Goldberg kids to a Saturday detention, but it is Principal Ball who must oversee the kids. Later, Murray arrives and takes over where he gives an...

Barry (Troy Gentile) sets out to defy Murray (Jeff Garlin) and become a P.E. teacher. Erica (Hayley Orrantia) looks to be a video-dating matchmaker for Lainey's (AJ Michalka) dad.

Erica and Adam both take the lead from TV's "The Brady Bunch" and "George Glass" their crushes. Adam risks bodily harm in an intense game of paintball, and Erica might be embarrassed when her friends see through her fake college-aged boyfriend. Meanwhile, Murray's stubbornness causes Beverly to miss seeing the Beach Boys at Live Aid.

As Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) tries to find Adam some lunchtime friends, the Goldbergs' new answering machine launches a war between Murray (Jeff Garlin) and his father, Pop-Pop (Judd Hirsch).

Hoping to be the next Stephen King, Adam (Sean Giambrone) writes a horror story whose monster is based on Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey). Erica (Hayley Orrantia) schemes to get a date with Geoff (Sam Lerner) on Halloween.

Adam decides to use Murray's love of action movies to convince his dad to help him make one. But the production goes haywire when a new leading man is needed after Barry goes missing. Meanwhile, Erica goes shopping with Beverly for a new wardrobe.

Thanksgiving finds Murray (Jeff Garlin) and his brother (guest star Dan Fogler) fighting over their Knight Rider fandom. Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and Bill Lewis (David Koechner) begin a turkey cook-off.
