In 1941 during the height of WWII, Petya runs a math class for children in a small village near Rostov. He is ignorant to politics and a pacifist, straying away from trouble. After a ferocious fight, the Red Army retreats and the Nazis occupy the territory. Tragedy strikes the village, but redemption is certain with a weapon in Petya's hands: the old rifle.
