The Pinkertons

William (Will) Pinkerton has been assigned to investigate a series of bank robberies in and around booming Kansas City. When thieves rob a train (the first time a train has been robbed!) and kill a Union Army sharpshooter on his way home from the just-ended Civil War, it becomes clear there is more going on than meets the eye.

When a whiskey magnate is found stabbed to death in a brothel, the Pinkertons are hired by the dead man’s widow to find the prostitute she suspects robbed then murdered her wealthy husband. Clashing with Kansas City’s Sheriff, Kate and Will begin to suspect that the now missing prostitute may have been framed.

A ragtag group of touring actors arrives in Kansas City to put on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Kansas City’s culture-starved citizens get more than they bargained for when one of the cast dies on stage, the victim of poisoning. Will goes undercover to replace the dead actor while Kate questions the colorful cast of characters… any one of whom could be the killer.

Kate and Will are hired by a Japanese prospector to find out who killed his business partner after a game of poker. The case seems simple enough, with the three other card players being 8the prime suspects. But as Kate and Will interview the suspects their varying stories paint a far more complicated picture, especially when it’s revealed that the dead man was also a bounty hunter.

A young, idealistic Civil War hero suddenly poses a challenge to Kansas City’s incumbent mayor and the campaign turns dirty. When the challenger is attacked during a campaign speech, Will offers the Pinkertons’ services to protect the candidate, much to Kate’s chagrin who is far more skeptical of politicians than Will.

Kate stumbles upon a grisly scene – a body in an alley, a traumatized witness, and a gunman fleeing into the shadows. Kate gives chase but loses the killer, then returns to find the witness has disappeared. With only the body to go on, Kate and Will must piece together what happened.

Will, a dog lover, offers to help a local farmer find the killer of his dog, pro bono – despite Kate’s objections.

A civilized Chippewa man who has lived in Kansas City for fifteen years is found murdered in his home. Sitting by the body, mute, is a 12 year old Sioux boy, the dead man’s nephew. The Pinkertons are hired by a former government Indian Agent - the dead man’s best friend.

A wealthy New York matron hires the Pinkertons to track down her missing nephew, a peddler recently arrived in Kansas City. Will and Kate discover the peddler’s connection with a ruthless gang of fences, and when another member of the gang turns up dead, they fear the worst.

Kate’s childhood friend Henry arrives in Kansas City, part of an underground bare-knuckle boxing ring that sets up temporary residence at the Dubois Hotel. When Henry’s opponent is found dead and Logan arrests him for the murder, Kate volunteers the Pinkertons to help clear his name.

A family of traveling spiritualists comes to town, sparking a lively debate between Kate and Will about the existence of the supernatural.

Four former nurses arrive in Kansas City for an unhappy reunion – haunted by a shared secret and a terrible burden of guilt, they’ve come to pay off a blackmailer who has threatened to expose them for something they did while serving together during the Civil War.

When a young woman’s husband is abducted, her father hires Will and Kate to negotiate his release. They put together a ransom, but the handoff goes south and the Pinkertons soonrealize that this is no simple snatch-and-grab.

The town is buzzing with the arrival of General Price, recently returned from exile in Mexico and looking to drum up support for his vision of a new Confederacy. Kate is rattled by Price’s presence – she crossed paths with him during the war, and witnessed his ruthlessness first hand while working undercover among his regiment.

When Kenji stumbles across the skeleton of a murdered woman on the edge of Kansas City, Will and Kate decide to take the case. They bring their discovery to Sheriff Logan’s attention, and are shocked when he identifies the victim as Isabelle, an old flame who went missing some years before.

Kansas City is gripped by a massive snowstorm on the night before a high profile trial is set to start. The crime occurred in Jefferson City, but the authorities, fearing mob justice, moved the proceedings to Kansas City and tasked the Pinkertons to protect the accused, notorious 11bootlegger Jeremiah Mudd.

The Buffalo Soldiers, a newly-formed army regiment of African Americans, are passing through Kansas City on a recruitment drive. When the unit’s cook goes missing, the Pinkertons are hired to investigate – but quickly run into trouble when the reticent soldiers refuse to cooperate.

Kansas City is set to host a high profile benefit for a Missouri children’s charity looking to build an orphanage. When the charity administrator is found dead, the Pinkertons are hired to find the killer. Concerned with the charity’s image, their client insists on total discretion, so Will and Kate are forced to pursue their investigation by going undercover in high society.

Kate and Will head out to meet their latest client, due to arrive from out of town. But when the coach reaches the station, they make a horrifying discovery – the driver and both occupants have been brutally murdered. When the victims’ spouses turn up to identify the remains, it looks like a straightforward case of adulterous betrayal turned deadly.

Will and Kate are less than thrilled when Will’s brother Robert arrives in Kansas City to conduct their annual performance review. Suddenly Kate and Will are in the hot seat – a position they’re neither used to, nor particularly comfortable with. What’s worse, Robert is interrogating their friends and colleagues, bringing up every questionable decision, every mistake they’ve ever 12made.

The Dubois plays host to author Leila Greenhow, in Kansas City to give a reading of her new tell-all biography of her mother, famed Confederate spy Rose Greenhow. The book is full of scandalous revelations, and it paints Allan Pinkerton as a notorious seducer – an allegation that takes Will and Kate by surprise.

A visiting Pinkerton agent is gunned down in the street by an unknown assailant, touching off a string of seemingly random killings. Will and Kate immediately take action, devastated by the loss of their fellow agent and determined to prevent further bloodshed. Suspicion falls initially on a local war veteran who is mentally ill.
