It's Elena's 18th birthday. As she searches for clues to locate Stefan, Damon tries to keep her from doing anything that might draw Klaus's attention. Meanwhile, Klaus and Stefan are busy trailing a werewolf named Ray Sutton, and Jeremy sees ghosts.

Klaus puts a plan in motion that will give him even more power, but things don't go to plan. Damon and Alaric reluctantly go along with Elena's new strategy to find Stefan, leading Damon into a dangerous fight with an unexpected enemy.

Stefan is reunited with a vampire he knew decades earlier. In a flashback to the 1920s, Stefan faces that shocking chapter from his wild past. Meanwhile, Tyler is concerned about Caroline back in Mystic Falls and turns to Sheriff Forbes for help.

A frustrating foe pushes Damon over the edge; Caroline tries to help Elena confront her feelings.

Despite recent events, Caroline's determined to see that Elena, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler all enjoy a traditional Senior Prank Night before the school year begins at Mystic Falls High School, but the evening takes a deadly turn. Klaus continues using Stefan.

On the first day of their senior year, Elena, Caroline, Bonnie and Matt are still reeling from recent events. Everyone's surprised by the arrival of a new student in Alaric's history class. Stefan continues to carry out his latest assignment from Klaus.

Spirits invade Mystic Falls as its citizens prepare to celebrate their traditional Illumination Night. After a violent encounter with an angry spirit, Damon asks Bonnie for help. Elena asks Jeremy to use his link to the other side to help her find Stefan.

Elena and Rebekah engage in a power struggle until Rebekah divulges some of her family's ancient secrets and the violent past she shares with Klaus. Damon tries a new approach to break through to Stefan when an unlikely ally surprises them both.

On the night of the homecoming dance, Rebekah tells Elena why the evening is so important to her, leaving Elena with conflicting emotions. Determined to outsmart Klaus, Damon enters into a dangerous partnership.

Klaus turns to violence to convince Damon and Elena that no one will be safe until he finds Stefan and gets his family back. Tyler makes the most of his new abilities as a hybrid, but he must also face the disturbing consequences of his actions.

Elena, Bonnie and Matt surprise Caroline with a small party for her 18th birthday. Tyler refuses to go along with Klaus' latest demand. Alaric runs into Dr. Fell at a Founders' meeting while she's arguing with her ex-boyfriend -- the medical examiner.

Bonnie's recurring dreams about Klaus' coffins lead her to a reunion with her mother, Abby, whom Bonnie hasn't seen for 15 years. Next, Bonnie and Elena meet Jamie, a young man Abby took in years ago. Damon is intrigued by Alaric's new friend, Dr. Fell.

Sheriff Forbes delivers disturbing news to Alaric and Elena about a recent murder weapon, and Caroline is heartbroken when she's unable to stop a tragedy from unfolding. Stefan turns to Bonnie and Abby for help killing Klaus, and Damon asks an old friend.

Elena is invited to a formal ball at Klaus' mansion and learns of a horrifying plan that could lead to numerous deaths. Who can she trust with her new information? After an evening of violence and dashed hopes, Damon finds a new way to cope.

When Elijah gives Damon and Stefan a dangerous ultimatum that puts Elena in danger, they turn to Alaric and Meredith for help. Bonnie and Abby find themselves participating in a ritual to appease the spirits of nature.

The present-day murders in Mystic Falls remind Damon of a century-old crime spree. Flashing back to 1912, Damon recalls a beautiful vampire, Sage. Elena and Matt resort to breaking and entering in their search for evidence to prove Dr. Fell is a murderer.

Damon is surprised to learn why Sage has returned and pleased when she devises an unusual method to help him figure out what Rebekah is up to. Abby is having a hard time adjusting to her new reality, despite Bonnie and Caroline's efforts to help.

Stefan's emotional turmoil leads him to a dangerous confrontation with Klaus and, later, to a heartbreaking moment with Elena. Klaus and Rebekah discover how to motivate Finn to cooperate, but Rebekah's more interested in taking revenge on Damon.

Caroline's thrilled when Tyler returns to town, but he soon suspects that something has been going on between her and Klaus. Matt tries to keep Rebecca occupied. Elena and Damon visit Jeremy in Denver to ask for help finding ancient vampire bloodlines.

The 1920s Decade Dance takes a deadly turn when Damon and Stefan realize they need the help of Matt, Jeremy and Bonnie to undo a spell that could be devastating for everyone. Alaric finds an unexpected ally to guide him on his dangerous new path.

Klaus prepares to leave town with Elena but finds resistance from a surprising new enemy. Suprisingly, Damon and Stefan talk candidly about the future.

Jeremy makes a life-changing decision in hopes of protecting his sister.
