The battles of the Louvre

Throughout the centuries, as the fortress of Louvre has been home to many kings, it has been transformed and extended several times. It was built at the end of the 12th century, by King Philippe Auguste in order to defend Paris against enemy invasions. When Charles V decided to take the Louvre as a royal residence, he ordered its expansion and a construction of the new enclosure around Paris.
