Puglia (Italy), 1949. Julia, seven years old, lives with her father Cosimo, a shoemaker, bowed by debts and frustration. Her wife ran off with a black American military and Cosimo is trying to carry on. One evening he brings Giulia to the circus. The little girl is fascinated by the ponies' performance.
