The story starts in Dijon in 1913. Eve is the daughter of a prominent doctor, and is destined to be married off to Roger Grillont, but instead she falls in love with a low-class theater performer, Alain Marais.

The year is 1940, and World War II is in full motion. Freddy is stationed as an Air Transport Auxiliary pilot in England and becomes good friends with co-pilot Jane Longbridge. She meets Jane's older brother Tony and soon marries him and becomes pregnant.

In 1952 Paul dies of a heart attack. Bruno interrupts his funeral to spit on his grave. There Edward recognizes him as his father's killer. It also turns out that Bruno prepared a scheme that he would own the chateau after Paul's death, following which he kicks Eve, Freddy and Delphine out.
