The Fourth Crusade

The huge number of rebellions and civil wars that took place within and against the Eastern Roman Empire is known to any fan of history But no other period featured as many of them as the late 11th and 12th centuries The Byzantines surrounded by enemies on all sides suffered constant attacks and this period effected a profound change in the region that reverberated throughout the centuries

Alexios III Angelos usurped the throne of the struggling Eastern Roman Empire in 1195 with no allies and very few resources For a brief moment however his realm was stable That stability ended when suddenly an army of Crusaders found itself at the walls of Constantinople How and why did the Fourth Crusade end up sacking Constantinople and what were the consequences

After embarking on the Fourth Crusade an army made mostly of Venetian forces sacked Constantinople and started dividing the Eastern Roman Empire However the Byzantines still had holdings both in Europe and Asia and they would remain a player going forward At the same time other regional powers the kingdoms of Hungary Jerusalem and more were now looking to exploit the new power balance

The Battle of Adrianople in 1205 reverberated throughout the region triggering a scramble for power among numerous lords How would the emerging leaders navigate this perilous landscape and which contenders would establish themselves as dominant figures The result of this struggle would decide the fate of those who manage to consolidate their power

Following the Battle of Klokotnitsa two contenders the Angelos and the Asen dynasties stood over the remnants of the Latin Empire poised to take that final step and restore the Eastern Roman Empire But which dynasty would ultimately prevail in this struggle for dominance The rivalry between these dynasties shaped the political landscape of the Balkans during the High Middle Ages
