DI John Tolin returns to work after an extended period of leave, but his first case back is a doozy: a multi-vehicle accident involving police officers, the car they were pursuing, a millionaire businessman, and a mysteriously abandoned van.

In the aftermath of the crash, the policemen assist Gareth and Alice in the car they had tried to pull over. Daniel Rampton flees the scene in a panic, while businessman Richard Reeves bonds with service-station worker Jane as he's treated for injuries. Inspector Ann Stallwood takes control of the case, and later at the hospital, Karen Donnelly is frantic to retrieve the documents from her car.

DI Tolin becomes suspicious when one of the survivors commits suicide a tad conveniently, the reason for Danny's flight is revealed, and Joyce has her own suspicions about her mother's death.

After Jeffrey and Sandra are brought in for questioning about the body found in Daniel's van, Sandra demands that her husband come clean to her and takes charge of the situation. As Tolin digs deeper into the mystery of Karen's killing, he begins to uncover a corporate conspiracy, even as he endures an emotional crisis with his daughter.

Tolin realizes there must be a second copy of the files that Karen stole from her company, and the real Guardian reporter theorizes about what she was trying to expose. Brian confesses the full truth to his wife, while Jane and Richard make plans for their future together. Stallwood gains more insight into what caused the crash that impacted all these people's lives.
