Inger has been working as a profiler for the FBI, but is now back in Sweden with her two daughters. Everything is going smoothly until her autistic oldest daughter Stina witnesses a brutal murder.

Inger is beginning to realize what her daughter has been through. She goes to Uppsala to investigate the murder of bishop Elisabeth Lindgren, which took place late on Christmas eve.

After much contemplation, Inger agrees to be a part of the investigation. At the same time, she is trying to understand how the information she gets from her daughters comes together; are the murders related?
