Jack London, author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang, stands alongside Hemingway and Faulkner as a shaper of American literature. At the start of the 20th century he was the most famous American writer of his time. He was by turns a vagrant, gold prospector, sailor, rancher, war reporter and militant socialist. He symbolized America's ambitions, from the conquest of the West to World War I.
