L26. Europe on the Eve of the Reformation. The Church was plagued with charges of worldliness and corruption. Monasteries were labeled "dens of iniquity." The monarchs of Europe were challenging Papal authority in political, financial, and religious matters. Rome itself was a vibrant, flourishing, and corrupt Renaissance city. And a young monk visited Rome in 1510. That monk was Martin Luther.
