WWI in the Trenches

Experience firsthand "the war to end all wars." World War I was the first war in history to affect most of the globe, with battles fought on land, at sea and, for the first time, in the sky. This series captures the experience almost a century after it happened, with rare footage, much of it never before released.

World War I started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. The assassination triggered a chain of events as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, leading to a series of alliances and treaties being activated.

The first year of World War I, beginning in 1914, was characterized by rapid mobilization and fierce battles on the Western Front.

The conflict saw the development of trench warfare, with major battles such as the Battle of the Marne, the First Battle of Ypres, and the Race to the Sea, leading to a stalemate that set the stage for the prolonged and devastating nature of the war.

The air war during WWI was significant as it marked the first widespread use of aircraft in combat, introducing reconnaissance, aerial dogfights, and strategic bombing. The development of aviation technology and tactics during the war laid the groundwork for the role of air power in future conflicts.

The year 1916 was marked by significant and brutal battles on the Western Front during World War I. The Battle of the Somme, where British and French forces faced the Germans, resulted in massive casualties, with over a million men killed or wounded, making it one of the bloodiest battles in history.

During World War I, Turkey, then the Ottoman Empire, initially maintained neutrality but later joined the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) in November 1914. The Ottomans aimed to secure their territorial integrity and pursue their strategic goals in the Caucasus and the Middle East.

World War I came to an end with the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918. The Central Powers, including Germany, were facing increasing pressure and internal strife, and with the entry of the United States into the war on the side of the Allies, the balance of power shifted decisively.
