At the end of the 18th century, France was shaken by a serious financial crisis. To remedy the situation, King Louis XVI convened a meeting of the people's representatives (the clergy, nobility and Third Estate).

After the storming of the Bastille, King Louis XVI tried to calm the situation and let the National Assembly abolish privileges and proclaim the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

In June 1791, King Louis XVI decided to flee Paris with the royal family, but was caught and arrested at Varennes. His attempted escape and arrest sent shockwaves.

In the summer of 1791, Theroigne de Méricourt was finally freed by the Austrians, following negotiations between the French government and the Austrian Emperor Leopold II.

As Austro-Prussian troops march on Paris to put an end to the Revolution, the royal family is locked up in the Temple prison.

The death of King Louis XVI sent shockwaves through Europe. Now a widow, Queen Marie-Antoinette was confined to the Concierge in Paris. After a trial, she was found guilty.
