Jan is a 25 year-old Norwegian and aspiring rock musician who has fallen in love with Jasmin, a Pakistani-Norwegian woman who's perfect for him in every way- except that her parents have promised her in marriage to a cousin on his way over from Pakistan. While Jasmin loves Jan too, she believes in the customs of her culture and will only marry someone of her family's choosing. The wedding is imminent, and all seems hopeless. But Jan loves Jasmin so much he can't let her go. Instead, he's determined to win her back by becoming the man of her family's dreams. To work his way into the family's good graces, Jan goes undercover as a student researching immigrant grocery stores and begins working for Jasmin's father Allahditta, a cantankerous store owner none to fond of Norwegians, and more cranky than ever with the wedding plans on his mind. Slowly, Jan makes himself indispensable to Allahditta, and, in this meeting of east and west, of Norwegian and Pakistani ways, the two become friends. But will this new understanding and friendship be enough to convince Allahditta that Jan is suitable for his beloved and betrothed daughter? Import Export is a warm, entertaining comedy that explores the problems inherent in the meeting of two such distinct cultures as the Norwegian and the Pakistani.
