Retired detective Alex Ridley returns to assist Carol and Goodwin in investigating a series of jewelry raids. A thief who is about to disclose vital information about the gang is killed after leaving court, turning the case into a murder investigation. An undercover cop handled by Ridley infiltrates the group; but tensions rise as Carol suspects they’re getting dangerously close to the suspects.

Ridley and Carol are close to cracking their murder case following a jewelry heist. The team discovers connections to a local stud farm and a middleman in the drug trade. As the plot unfolds, Ridley discovers the missing piece is held by an unlikely person with a closely guarded secret. Meanwhile, Carol and Geri are adjusting to life with their baby, and Annie’s found love in a new relationship.

When a decomposed body is found deep in Hawsley Wood, it is identified as a local woman, Janie, who went missing six years ago. Ridley, along with Carol, Goodwin and the team, brings in disgraced ex-cop Jean Dixon who ran the original case. Despite past conflicts between Ridley and Jean, he aims to mend their troubled relationship. Janie's daughter Sam reveals a surprising lead in their inquiry.

Ridley’s investigation into the body found in a hollow tree continues. The murder investigation uncovers the victim’s extramarital affairs, leading Ridley to a number of new suspects. But when another body is found dead, it triggers a chain of events that will lead to the shocking truth. Meanwhile at Marling’s Jazz Club, Harry makes Ridley an offer to save the club from dire financial straits.
