Legends & Lies: The Patriots

Under oppressive British rule, a secret rebel group, the "Sons of Liberty," emerges. Initially smugglers avoiding heavy taxes, they grow into a force for independence, led by Paul Revere and Sam Adams. Tensions peak when a British agent kills a boy, sparking the Boston Massacre. The American Revolution ignites.

Lawyer John Adams defends British soldiers from the Boston Massacre. His success pulls him into the rebel cause. As British control tightens, the Boston Tea Party occurs, making the Sons of Liberty targets. Before the Brits can capture Sam Adams and John Hancock, Paul Revere helps them escape. The first shot of the revolution is fired at Lexington.

After years with elites in London, Benjamin Franklin returns to America, facing suspicion as a traitor. He aims to prove his patriotism, using his intellect to sway Congress in favor of revolution. As George Washington leads the Continental Army, Franklin leads a secret committee to ready the inexperienced army to challenge the world's strongest military force.

Inexperienced Commander George Washington faces challenges building a military from untested militia and limited supplies. The British Army is nearby in Boston, but Washington's clever bluff leads to their retreat, marking the Continental Army's first victory. Encouraged, he marches to New York, unaware of a plot against him by his own guard.

After a struggle between rebels and loyalists, Congress agrees to declare independence. Britain's General Howe arrives in New York, pressing for time. Yet, Jefferson argues with Franklin and Adams over the founding text. The declaration is signed and spread across the colonies. In New York, Washington uses it to inspire his troops, but its words may not suffice to hold the vital city.

Nathan Hale is captured and hanged for treason. Benjamin Tallmadge replaces him to continue the Continental intelligence operation. General Washington's trusted general, Benedict Arnold, is court-martialed, betrays Washington, and offers West Point to the British for a commission. Tallmadge pursues Arnold, but Arnold escapes in a red coat, becoming America's most infamous traitor.

Daring soldiers innovate a new warfare, favoring American Patriots. Francis Marion leads a guerilla assault on the British, gaining the nickname "Swamp Fox." Marion stops the British in the South, leading them north toward Washington. With French aid, Washington besieges the enemy, forcing Cornwallis's surrender. This victory leads to the Treaty of Paris and America's independence.

Following the Revolution, America experiences a governmental crisis with financial debt and political conflict. The Founding Fathers work to ensure freedoms, while personal rivalries and rebellion threaten stability. Washington is drawn out of retirement to address these issues, balancing Federal authority against individual and states' rights.

George Washington, after two terms, hands the presidency to John Adams. Adams loses to Thomas Jefferson in 1800, marking a win for anti-federalists. Jefferson's presidency fuels political discord, climaxing with Aaron Burr, his VP, killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Burr, accused of corruption, returns to office, then leaves to annex Florida and Texas, leading to his treason trial.

Beyond the known Founding Fathers, the American Revolution has a less-told story. African Americans were pivotal, from the Boston Massacre to Yorktown's surrender. Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, Salem Poor, Phillis Wheatley, and Jack Sisson, among others, risked their lives as Black patriots for America's freedom and their own, shaping history with their bravery and contributions.

The American Revolution isn't just about achieving independence from Britain. It's about a diverse group uniting for a national identity. Leaders like Samuel Adams, George Washington, and others play key roles. The fight unfolds from streets to Congress. Their efforts create a unique nation founded on the powerful idea that all men are created equal.
