Les Miserables

In war-torn France, Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving 19 years for a petty crime. The ambitious prison guard Javert is convinced he will reoffend. Life as an ex-convict is brutal, and his past continues to haunt him. Meanwhile in Paris, cheerful young seamstress Fantine meets the love of her life

An encounter with the wise bishop of Digne forces Jean Valjean to consider his own morality. Fantine leaves Paris with her little daughter Cosette. To find work she must make a heart-breaking decision on her way and leaves Cosette with the Thénardier family. Jean Valjean forges a new identity as manufacturer and mayor but still Javert is determined to catch him out.

The Thénardiers demand more money for Cosette. Fantine is forced to take desperate measures to make ends meet. Manipulated by Javert, Jean Valjean is ready to give himself up to the law, but he makes a promise to Fantine that changes everything.

Valjean has not forgotten his promise to Fantine. After he escaped from prison he finds Cosette beaten and abused at the Thénardiers’ inn. Valjean pays them money for Cosette and they make their escape towards Paris, but the obsessive Javert remains on their tail. They hide in a convent.

Teenage Cosette begins to question her closeted life. She and Valjean leave the convent and start a new life in Paris, but Valjean worries when Cosette meets idealistic student Marius. Javert comes closer to catching his nemesis, and the Thénardiers are forced to start a new life of their own.

Thénardier’s plot against Jean Valjean comes up against Javert. Paris is on the brink of revolt, but Javert can only think of finding the elusive Valjean. Marius leaves revolution aside as he and Cosette fall deeper in love. As the populace rises up and fighting begins, anxious Valjean makes a plan to take Cosette away to safety.

The revolutionaries fight. Javert is convinced he’ll find Valjean in the fray. Marius fears he’s lost Cosette, and so joins the battle. Conflicted over Marius’s love for Cosette, Jean Valjean seeks him out at the barricade.

Javert is in turmoil as he finally confronts Valjean. Marius is miraculously reunited with his love Cosette, and wonders who could have saved his life. Out of love for his adoptive daughter, Valjean makes a heart-breaking decision.
