Angelica Fanshawe strives to protect her daughter Beth and her Catholic husband from the tyrannical doctrine of King Charles II. Meanwhile, colonists in New England struggle with the Crown's control.

In Massachusetts, John Hawkins sends his son Ned to England. Abe and Beth's love grows in Oxfordshire, but they both face a steep penalty when Abe takes drastic action against the Crown.

Beth's ship wrecks on the shores of Massachusetts. Ned returns to Boston to find Hope stuck in a loveless marriage to Henry Cresswell. Back in England, Abe joins forces with Colonel Algernon Sidney. Later, Ned returns to Hope with a fugitive Beth in tow, Abe plans an escape and Beth decides it is time to leave the New World.
