Two dead bodies are found at the river worship ceremony of Tientsin in the Republic of China era. One of the bodies is Ding Yanqiu, president of the Tsao Transport Council, and the small body is a dead baby, covered all over with green hair. Just came back from study abroad, young master Ding Mao put his suspicion on the young river god Guo Deyou who actually saved his life last night.

Guo Deyou casts a smoke spell then faints, his childhood sweetheart, little witch Gu Ying rushes to his rescue. Ding Mao has examined the body, and comes to same conclusion as Guo Deyou that Ding Yiqiu died in the sea. Ding Mao obtains a temporary police detective identity at the police station, then goes back to the Dragon King Temple to investigate Guo Deyou, but he was stopped by Guo Chun.

Guo Deyou and Gu Ying to the ghost market to check the birth records, Ding Mao goes to the police station to check missing people files. They find out that there was a young lady Xue Yuanyuan at Xue Mansion gave birth to a baby some time ago, but the baby died recently. Guo Deyou conned Ding Mao to investigate under the guise of paying condolence at the funeral.

Housekeeper of Xue Mansion Uncle Gui goes to the Dragon King Temple to pick up the baby’s body, he tells Guo Deyou said that none of them actually saw Miss Xue drowned in the river. While sending the dead baby back, Guo Deyou casts the smoke spell on Xue Yuanyuan, he finds out the real cause of her death.

The body is sent back to the charity hospital, the hospital is sealed off by the the Transport Council. Xiao Lanlan finds it strange, she asks Ding Mao to help her enter the hospital. The reason is that Xiao Lanlan's fiance Qian Zixian has been missing for many days. Ding Mao takes Xiao Lanlan to the hospital but is refused entry.

Guo Deyou, Ding Mao and Gu Ying sneak into the hospital morgue, they find Xiao Lanlan there too. Qian Zixian's body is also mixed in the bodies. Ding Mao examines the bodies and find they all have a strange disease, their blood vessels are blue and purple with curvature. But the body of Qian Zixian doesn’t have such infection. All of them died of poisoning.

Guo Deyou and Gu Ying, Ding Mao and Xiao Lanlan, all go to Junhua Grand Hotel. Guo Deyou created a chaos that helped them go into the opium den at back of the hotel. These four make a real fuss here and found a secret room, inside the room stores the shipping records of Tsao Transport Council.

At night Housekeeper Hu comes to visit Ding Mao at the police station, when he leaves, Ding Mao find Manager Wang drowned in his cell. Guo Deyou deduces his conclusion. Xiao Lanlan finds out about the origin of Xuanwu statue through filed up newspapers, she also finds out that Ding Yiqiu, Hu Haijiang and Guo Chun exterminated a cult called Ancient Evil Way over 20 years ago.

Ding Mao comforts Mrs. Hu, the wife of Butler Hu, and reveals that their son, Hu Tianming, died while serving the Transport Council. Mrs.Hu is now alone and in distress. Ding Mao is moved by her situation. Meanwhile, the rival group, Yisheng Men Dock, discovers the body of Feng Erma, a member of the canal transport crew.

Ding Mao examines Feng Erma's body at the Dragon King Temple and finds a tooth in the wound, indicating that the killer is missing their left ring finger. Guo Deyou uses the tooth to determine that the culprit is a deceased person, possibly Sun Laoqi, a thug who worked for the canal transport and is believed to have died in battle.

While having breakfast, Xiao Hai recalls the crime scene. Based on his recollection, it is revealed that Sun Laoqi emerged from the water and dragged Feng Erma underwater to bite him to death. The clues become complex and perplexing. Guo Deyou decides to search for Sun Laoqi in the river. Ding Mao reminisces about the time spent with Hu Tianming during their childhood and feels nostalgic.

Lian Huaqing appears and uses a musical instrument to control the floating corpses, resurrecting them. Guo Deyou and Ding Mao engage in a fierce battle with numerous undead at the hospital. Meanwhile, the resurrected Feng Erma at the Dragon King Temple fights against Gu Ying and Xiao Lanlan. Guo Deyou and Ding Mao manage to escape and trigger an explosion at the hospital.

Just as Ding Mao recovers from his injuries, Guo Deyou unexpectedly visits him to borrow money. At that moment, a conflict erupts at the canal transport dock due to a film crew shooting a movie. Guo Deyou accompanies Ding Mao to resolve the issue at the dock and meets the film star Wang Meiren. They are invited to attend a promotional dinner for the movie.

After Huang Yisuo is found hanged and Wang Meiren falls into a coma, Gu Ying also collapses. Wang Meiren, traumatized by the events, becomes disoriented but is comforted by Guo Deyou. Gu Ying regains consciousness and recalls being attacked by a bald and fat man with a suitcase, before fainting again.

Gu Ying, Ding Mao, and Guo Deyou confront Wu Laoxian, but they fall into his illusions. They narrowly escape death and eventually find Wu Laoxian strangled to death and Huang Yudeng in a trance-like state. Huang Yudeng claims self-defense but is exposed by Guo Deyou's discernment, revealing his plot to kill his brother and Wu Laoxian.

Guo Deyou, Gu Ying, and Ding Mao gather clues and decide to find the person with the scriptures to defeat the Mogu Road. They plan to steal files from the police station but encounter challenges along the way. Meanwhile, Cuifengzi from Yishengmen tries to disrupt the shipping guild but is thwarted by Xiao Lanlan's intervention.

Guo Deyou manages to extract information from the police station and finds the mother source needed to decrypt the password. He entrusts it to Xiao Lanlan to help decipher the clues. They learn that ten bodies have been purchased and stored in wooden crates in the Ghost Market.

Hu's wife confesses to Guo Deyou and Gu Ying why she performed necromancy, but unexpectedly, the revived corpses cause chaos in the Consulate. Lian Huaqing takes advantage of the situation and escapes. The resurrected Hu Tianming captures Ding Mao, and in an attempt to save Ding Mao, Hu's wife sacrifices herself along with her son.

Guo Deyou and his companions discover the existence of a special cell in the prison where the ancient magic practitioner, known as the Little Immortal, is held. They infiltrate the prison and encounter various challenges, including a prison break and confrontations with hypnotized individuals.

After the prison turmoil, Guo Deyou saves the hypnotized girl and confronts Huang Yu, who is ultimately killed by Captain Fu. The military takes control of the prison, and the Little Immortal is reported dead and buried. Wang Meiren and Gu Ying reconcile, while Guo Deyou and Ding Mao investigate the connection between the prison riot and the Ancient Magic Path.

In their quest to find the Little Immortal, Ding Mao and Guo Deyou discover that the Little Immortal was secretly kept captive by Xiao San as a bargaining chip. They are attacked by unknown assailants but are saved by Xiao San. Gu Ying disregards warnings and searches for Guo Deyou at the Dragon King Temple.

Gu Ying goes missing, and Guo Deyou meets the Little Immortal who reveals the truth about the Mo Gu Dao. She forces Guo Deyou to join their side by using Gu Ying's life as leverage. Xiao San becomes infected with the Mo Gu Dao virus. Guo Deyou encounters Xiao Lanlan and Ding Mao, informing them of the situation.

In a critical moment, Guo Deyou enters a dream-like state of resolving grievances, but with the guidance of his master, he abruptly awakens. He pulls the Little Immortal into the water, causing her to drown and rescuing Gu Ying. On the street, Xiao San intercepts Xiao Lanlan and reveals that Lian Huaqing has a grand conspiracy.

Lian Huaqing has discovered the source of the Mo Gu Dao virus, a poisonous underground pool known as the Evil Water Source.His ultimate plan is to detonate the pool, infecting the entire city of Tianjin. Guo Deyou pretends to cooperate and follows Lian Huaqing to the Evil Water Source.
