A vibrant testament to the magic and creativity of its inhabitants, the vision for this whimsical land was brought to life through the extraordinary efforts of production designer Nathan Crowley and his team, who transformed an ambitious concept into a breath taking reality. “The journey to create Munchkinland began with a series of productive discussions, culminating in the decision to cultivate nine million tulips in Norfolk, an eastern English county known for its expansive flatlands and vast, open skies,” Crowley says. “Our vision involved integrating the Munchkin village within the tulip fields, creating a smooth transition between the cultivated fields and the small marketplace village where many of the musical numbers would unfold.”

In the fantastical land of Oz, Shiz University stands as a beacon of academic prestige and architectural brilliance. It transcends being merely a setting; it embodies a character of its own—a place resonating with antiquity while defying conventional architectural norms. The production design team’s vision materialized through the meticulous blending of influences from different cultures and artistic movements. “This deliberate fusion aimed to capture the essence of a bygone era where cultural boundaries dissolved and the land pulsed with a unified, potent magic, predating the Wizard's arrival," production designer Nathan Crowley says. “Evoking a sense of nostalgia was paramount in establishing the architectural style’s authenticity.”

Creating the Emerald City for WICKED  was a monumental challenge, as it had to transcend generic cityscapes and embody the whimsical essence of Oz. To achieve this, the team employed a dual approach of CGI and physical set construction. Detailed illustrations served as a blueprint for the CGI elements, while the physical set on the backlot required seamless integration with digital architecture. Drawing inspiration from the 1893 Chicago World Fair, production designer Nathan Crowley and his team designed mass-producible panels and deep archways to create the illusion of vast city views, framing every shot with grandeur.

Munchkinland’s identity stems from the texture of its buildings, featuring stucco and thatched roofs that shape the homes’ silhouettes. This architectural essence inspires the inhabitants’ costumes, integrating fabrics and shapes that echo Munchkinland’s textures and structures.

The costumes of Shiz University draw inspiration from modern student fashion, blending these trends into a fantasy context with distinctive silhouettes. They mirror the intellectual and educational atmosphere of the institution through tailored designs and scholarly motifs.

Art Nouveau permeates the essence of Emerald City, evident in the elaborate designs and graceful lines of the costumes. Luxurious fabrics and lavish details mirror the city’s role as the epicenter of power and culture in Oz.

Symbolizing warmth and illumination, orange hues highlight significant moments such as torch flames and sunset scenes, imbuing scenes with vibrant energy.

Utilized in the governor’s mansion and inspired by poppy symbolism, red lighting details add depth and intensity to scenes.

From the map room to the glow of THE GRIMMERIE, yellow hues in the film symbolize guidance and enlightenment.

Integral to the Emerald City’s aesthetic, green lighting intensifies as Glinda and Elphaba approach, reinforcing the city’s allure and the characters’ evolving journeys.

The Ozdust Ballroom, with its ice glass-inspired setting, posed lighting challenges ultimately overcome with a carefully selected blue palette. Framed against blue, Elphaba’s raw emotions are vividly revealed.

Chosen to represent the tornado and the Wizomania stage show, purple lighting adds dramatic flair and thematic cohesion to pivotal scenes in the narrative.

Symbolizing Glinda’s influence and transformation, pink lighting evolves throughout the “Popular” number, transitioning environments and highlighting narrative progression from dorm room shadows to a pink-lit dawn.

“Popular” is perhaps WICKED's most joyful song, capturing Glinda’s confidence and her gilded image of herself, the world and her place in it. Ariana Grande worked with director Jon M. Chu to find the perfect interpretation of the song for the film. “‘Popular’ was incredibly fun,” Grande says. “The song showcases Glinda as she believes she embodies ‘Glinda the Good’ before she truly understands what it means to be good. In the moment, Glinda thinks she’s giving Elphaba a great gift by teaching her the ways and lifestyle of ‘Glinda the Good.’ She genuinely sees beauty in Elphaba, and the scene is pivotal because it’s when Elphaba becomes vulnerable, likely for the first time, and Glinda experiences a genuine friendship for the first time.”

Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage) performs this song with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) as a warning about the dark, unseen forces at work in Oz. It is Dinklage’s first foray into musical performance. “Stephen Schwartz [music and lyrics] and Stephen Oremus [executive music producer] were instrumental—no pun intended—in helping me find Dillamond’s voice,” Dinklage says. “My background isn’t in musical theatre, but they made it feel less intimidating. It’s fun because, for me, it’s not about having a pitch-perfect voice but about grounding the performance in character. That’s more important to me than hitting every note perfectly. I like when the voice feels genuine to the character, and fortunately, that was the approach on WICKED as well.”

Something Bad

The song “One Short Day” is a tour through the Emerald City at a moment where Elphaba and Glinda go to see a show called Wizomania. In the film this scene has been expanded, telling the story of how the Wizard came to be the ruler of Oz in more detail, and introducing THE GRIMMERIE, the Ozian ancient book of enchantments.

For The Wizard of Oz’s signature song in the film, Jeff Goldblum was happy to reunite with his Prince of Egypt composer Stephen Schwartz. “On the occasion of my recording the song, Stephen directed me,” Goldblum says. “We had found keys that we both liked, and he enhanced and clarified a lot of what I was thinking. He knew exactly what he wanted, but he was very generous and collaborative about what I was bringing to it.”

A Sentimental Man

Long before it was a stage musical, the idea that Elphaba could sing appeared in the pages of Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel. “She sings three times in the pages of the novel,” Maguire says. “This wasn't a clue to Stephen [Stephen Schwartz, music and lyrics] that he should read my novel and make a musical out of it. Dorothy isn’t the only one who deserves her own anthem; anybody who has a hard life deserves a soliloquy in song. I wanted Elphaba to be able to sing on the page, but I didn’t know she was ever going to in real life. That was just joy and surprise to me.”
